Exelon Foundation’s $300K Seed Checks Spur Hundreds of Millions in Startup Funding

The Exelon Foundation has added two startups, Buckstop and Public Grid, to its 2c2i portfolio, offering up to $300,000 each and leveraging utility resources to accelerate climate-focused ventures.

Exelon’s charitable arm has incorporated Buckstop, an AI-driven platform that values components of decommissioned energy hardware, and Public Grid, a service that streamlines renter participation in solar and efficiency programs, into its 2c2i initiative, providing each with checks of up to $300,000. The foundation pairs funding with the operational reach of a utility serving nearly 11 million customers. Since its launch in 2019, the program has backed more than 30 clean-energy startups, prompting those firms to secure $555 million in additional investment, produce $548 million in revenue and add thousands of jobs, while cutting more than 1.2 million metric tons of carbon emissions.

Buckstop’s technology addresses the “price discovery problem” for retired electronics, potentially reducing landfill waste and enhancing domestic supply of critical minerals. Public Grid’s automatic enrollment model targets a demographic that traditionally underutilizes utility-based savings. Critics note the modest size of the checks relative to larger utility venture funds, but Exelon emphasizes equity stakes and the multiplier effect of its seed capital.

Why it matters

Utility-backed seed funding can unlock significant private investment for climate tech, accelerating clean-energy solutions and domestic metal recycling.
