Experimental compound TOFA boosts metabolism in mice without suppressing appetite
Researchers discovered that the experimental drug TOFA increases fat burning and energy use in mice, leading to weight loss without reducing food intake.
Scientists testing a new molecule called TOFA found that it triggers metabolic pathways in mice, prompting the animals to burn more fat and generate additional energy. The treated mice lost weight but retained most of their muscle mass, and their bodies expended 18% more calories without changes in activity or temperature. TOFA blocked new lipid synthesis in the liver and, unlike similar drugs, did not raise blood triglycerides, reducing cardiovascular risk.
The compound also enhanced insulin sensitivity and helped normalize blood sugar while alleviating signs of fatty liver disease. Comparative tests showed that TOFA alone was more effective than a combination of separate lipid-blocking and energy-boosting drugs, and pairing TOFA with GLP-1 medications yielded superior outcomes in weight, glucose control, insulin, and triglycerides. Researchers suggest TOFA could serve as a complementary therapy to existing GLP-1 treatments, though its safety and efficacy in humans remain untested.
