Experimental injection CBL-514 shown to cut dangerous visceral fat in early trials

Researchers reported that the experimental drug CBL-514 reduced visceral fat in participants, while a placebo group saw an increase.

During the annual European Association for the Study of Diabetes conference in Milan, scientists disclosed results from MRI analyses of two early-stage studies on the drug CBL-514. The compound induces programmed cell death in fat cells, targeting the visceral layer that surrounds abdominal organs. Subjects injected with CBL-514 every three weeks experienced a reduction in visceral fat after four weeks, while the placebo group’s fat volume rose.

By the end of the 8- to 12-week observation, the disparity between the groups had widened, with the treated cohort losing additional visceral fat. These findings hint that CBL-514 could lower health risks linked to visceral fat, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease, though larger trials are still underway to confirm safety and efficacy.

Why it matters

Visceral fat is linked to serious health issues; a drug that can safely reduce it could improve outcomes for many patients.
