A controversial procedure that links neck lymphatic vessels to veins has shown dramatic recoveries in a few Alzheimer’s patients, but researchers say solid proof is still lacking.
Deep cervical lymphatic-venous anastomosis (dcLVA) connects tiny neck lymphatics to nearby veins, aiming to improve brain waste clearance. After a striking video of an 80-year-old man’s recovery went viral, hundreds of Chinese clinics began offering the costly operation, prompting regulatory limits and the detention of its inventor Qingping Xie. Small Chinese studies suggest modest reductions in amyloid-β and tau and slight cognitive gains, yet larger trials show only limited benefits and raise questions about durability.
Researchers like Young-Kwon Hong and Jonathan Kipnis find the concept biologically sound but caution that the hype outpaces evidence and that procedural risks are not fully understood. Ongoing multinational trials, some employing robotic assistance, seek rigorous data, while many Alzheimer’s specialists remain skeptical, noting the need for controlled, placebo-controlled studies before the surgery can be endorsed.
