Experts warn against non-medical testosterone use among healthy young men
Urologist Abraham Morgentaler says testosterone therapy offers no benefit for most men in their 20s and can cause serious health risks.
According to urologist Abraham Morgentaler, testosterone treatment is medically justified only for men with a genuine deficiency, not for the majority of healthy 20-year-olds whose levels already fall within the normal 300-1,000 ng/dL range. He dismisses the myth that higher numbers automatically yield stronger bodies or greater masculinity, noting that the difference between low-normal and high-normal levels is negligible.
Unsupervised use, often encouraged by online influencers like Clavicular, can lead to infertility, cardiovascular issues, and exposure to unsafe substances such as heavy metals or unrelated drugs. Morgentaler also points out that the perceived “masculinity crisis” is more closely tied to obesity, stress, and economic insecurity than to any societal agenda. While legitimate testosterone deficiency remains under-diagnosed, one outlet hype may hinder access for those who truly need treatment.
Why it matters
Misusing testosterone can harm health and obscure care for men who actually need hormone therapy.
