Experts warn that flawed AI chains are fueling civilian harm in modern conflicts
Researchers say the combination of multiple AI tools in warfare creates error-prone systems that can lead to non-combatant casualties.
Heidy Khlaaf, a senior AI scientist at the AI Now Institute, highlighted that militaries are linking various algorithms into a "kill chain" that inherits the weaknesses of each component. A joint study with Airwars points to these linked systems as a source of mistaken targeting. The report warns that operators often accept machine recommendations without independent verification, increasing the risk of civilian deaths in places like Ukraine, Gaza and Iran.
Why it matters
Unchecked AI in weapons systems can cause avoidable civilian deaths, raising ethical and security concerns worldwide.
