Experts warn that popular squishy dumpling toys may expose children to toxic chemicals and hazards

A medical lecturer warned that squishy dumpling toys can contain hazardous chemicals and water beads, posing serious health risks especially to young children.

Clinical lecturer Dr Khoo Wee Vien warned that the trendy squishy dumpling toys marketed to children may harbor dangerous substances, including benzene, toluene and xylene, which can be inhaled or ingested and potentially cause cancers such as leukaemia after prolonged exposure. Pregnant women are also at risk of fetal genetic mutations. The toys often contain water beads that expand inside the digestive tract if swallowed, sometimes requiring surgical removal.

Additionally, heating the toys in microwave ovens or exposing them to high temperatures in cars can cause them to explode, inflicting severe skin burns. Dr Khoo advised caregivers to reject any toy that feels sticky, emits a petrol odor, or contains tiny beads, and to discard such items promptly. She noted that several Western countries have issued warnings or bans on these products, yet counterfeit versions remain widely available online and near schools.

Why it matters

Children could suffer serious injuries or long-term health problems from toxic chemicals and choking hazards in these toys.
