Explosion and fire at MRPL refinery injure seven, cause citywide shock
A blast at MRPL's Hydro Sulphur Treatment Unit sparked a fire that was later contained, leaving one seriously injured and six with minor injuries.
A powerful blast struck the CHT unit of Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd, sending a deafening roar across Mangaluru and generating dense black smoke. The fire was brought under control by emergency responders, and seven people were treated for injuries—one with burns covering about 35% of his body and six others with minor wounds. City police commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy CH, the deputy commissioner, and the Zilla Panchayat CEO visited the refinery, and MRPL confirmed no fatalities.
Nearby residents reported shaking houses and rattling windows, and the explosion was heard at Mangaluru airport, prompting a visual safety inspection of critical systems. Local MP Capt Brijesh Chowta stayed in contact with authorities and asked the public to remain calm and avoid rumors.
