Extensive Search Launched for 24-Year-Old Hiker Missing in California Canyon

A solo hike turned into a missing-person case when 24-year-old Ian Roberts left his vehicle at Overlook Park in Auburn and vanished in the nearby American River Canyon. His parents alerted authorities on Saturday, prompting the Placer County Sheriff’s Office to locate his car and launch a multi-agency operation. Search and rescue teams from Napa, Santa Clara, Marin and Sacramento Counties joined local responders, deploying volunteers, dogs and aerial support.

The canyon, known for steep terrain, fast-moving river sections and wildlife including black bears, mountain lions and rattlesnakes, poses significant hazards. With forecast temperatures climbing to 94 degrees, officials emphasized the urgency of locating Roberts before heat and dehydration become critical.
