F-16 fighter jet crashes near US Spangdahlem base, pilot ejects safely
An F-16 of the 52nd Fighter Wing crashed near Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany on Tuesday, the pilot ejected safely and a local civilian was injured.
Around 2.30 pm local time on Tuesday, an F-16 Fighting Falcon belonging to the US Air Force’s 52nd Fighter Wing went down near the US-run Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany’s Eifel region. The aircraft’s pilot successfully ejected and survived. Fire and emergency teams from the Bitburg-Prüm district were dispatched, confirming that a civilian sustained injuries.
Officials have opened an investigation into the crash’s cause. Spangdahlem, established in the early 1950s as a NATO operations centre, hosts a squadron of roughly 20 F-16s and supports about 5,000 US military and civilian personnel, plus several hundred German employees. The base is considered one of the most important US airfields in Germany, alongside Ramstein.
