F-35B fires eight StormBreaker smart bombs in single salvo during Arizona test
An American F-35B fighter demonstrated the ability to release eight StormBreaker smart bombs simultaneously at multiple targets during a test in Arizona.
During a weapons trial in Arizona, an F-35B fighter launched eight StormBreaker precision bombs in a single “ripple-eight” sequence, striking several targets at once. StormBreaker, developed by RTX Corporation, uses a tri-modal seeker that fuses radar, millimeter-wave, infrared and semi-active laser inputs, allowing it to hit stationary or mobile targets under day, night or adverse weather conditions. The test underscores the growing capacity of fifth-generation US combat aircraft to deliver concentrated, accurate effects from one platform, potentially reducing the need for multiple sorties.
The munition is already operational on the F-15E and is being added to the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the broader F-35 fleet. Such a capability is seen as advantageous in high-intensity conflict zones where dispersed or time-sensitive targets must be engaged while limiting aircraft exposure to enemy air defenses. The F-35B’s short-takeoff/vertical-landing design further enables deployment from amphibious assault ships, expanding the Marine Corps’ strike options.
