FA chief decries booing of Welcome to Country at Australia Cup final

Football Australia CEO Martin Kugeler condemned fans who booed the Welcome to Country ceremony before the Australia Cup final, calling the behavior contrary to the sport’s values.

The Australia Cup final at AAMI Park saw South Melbourne triumph over Melbourne Victory in a tense penalty shootout, a result celebrated as a breakthrough for clubs outside the A-League. Before kickoff, a Welcome to Country ceremony performed by Uncle Colin Hunter Junior on behalf of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people was met with booing from a portion of the crowd, repeating a disturbance that occurred in the 2022 final.

Football Australia chief executive Martin Kugeler described the incident as inconsistent with the respect and inclusivity that define the game and reaffirmed the sport’s strong ties to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. He thanked the traditional owners for their generosity and reiterated a commitment to making matches welcoming for all. Victorian Minister for Sport Steve Dimopoulos also condemned the behavior, invoking the Greek concept of “filotimo” to stress the need for dignity and respect toward the land’s original custodians.

Why it matters

The incident highlights ongoing challenges of cultural respect in Australian sport and the need for stronger inclusion efforts.
