Fact-check site challenges Rahul Gandhi's claims from student rallies

A fact-checking website named “jhooth ki goonj” has taken aim at statements made by Rahul Gandhi during his “Chhatron ki Goonj” student outreach events, which he is using as part of his campaign against the government. The site, which does not disclose its operators, posted a list of what it calls falsehoods from the four rallies held so far. One specific claim it challenged was Gandhi’s figure that 29% of women experience physical violence, arguing that the number comes from older National Family Health Survey data.

According to the site, the NFHS shows a drop in spousal physical or sexual violence from 37.2% in 2005-06 to 22.3% in 2023-24 after the Modi administration took office. The BJP has publicly rejected any association with the fact-check portal. As the site gained traction on social media, some users attributed its creation to “nationalist researchers” and members of Generation Z, the demographic Gandhi is targeting in his city-to-city tours.
