Family allowance to double in 2027 while tax exemption for older two-child mothers is not extended

From 2027 the Hungarian government will double the family allowance, but it will not broaden the income-tax exemption for mothers over 40 with two children.

In a parliamentary statement, Magyar Péter said the family allowance will be raised to twice its current level starting in 2027. The increase applies to all eligible families, while the previously discussed extension of personal income-tax exemption for mothers over 40 with two children will not be implemented. Earlier government plans had envisioned a gradual rollout of that exemption by age group through 2029.

Magyar Nemzeti Bank had estimated that the full program would eventually affect around 700,000 two-child mothers. The prime minister noted that the combined reforms, including tax cuts for workers, would boost family incomes. The Tisza government had pledged the allowance hike as early as September 2025 and included it in its 2026 election platform. Currently, the benefit amounts to 12,200 ft per child, 13,300 ft for a second child and 16,000 ft for three or more.

Why it matters

The changes will affect millions of Hungarian families' finances and alter previously promised tax benefits.
