Family hit by accidental £145,000 Thames Water direct debit error

A north London household discovered an unexpected £145,562 debit from Thames Water, which the company says resulted from a meter-reading mistake and has since refunded the amount.

Adam Bainbridge, a teacher in north London, found a £145,562 debit from Thames Water on his bank statement on Thursday morning, prompting immediate concern for his family. Thames Water acknowledged the incident as a human error stemming from an inaccurate meter reading and issued an unreserved apology, confirming that the full amount has been returned to the Bainbridge account. The family experienced blocked payments and financial strain while trying to manage routine bills and childcare.

A Thames Water spokesperson said additional checks are being introduced to prevent similar incidents. Halifax clarified that direct-debit amounts are determined by the service provider, and consumers are protected by a direct-debit guarantee against such errors.
