Family of Cal State Fullerton freshman who died after off-campus party calls for fraternity safety education

Anthony Joseph Blas, an 18-year-old freshman at California State University, Fullerton, died after being found unresponsive and taken to St. Jude Medical Center on September 13. His family, grieving his loss, created a GoFundMe campaign and are demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, including why 911 was not called and who was present before he was dropped off. They are also urging legislators to mandate clearer education for new students on how to recognize and avoid unrecognized or underground fraternities.

While the event was reportedly linked to a gathering associated with Delta Chi, the fraternity’s national office states that no active chapter exists at the campus and official confirmation of its involvement is lacking. The family hopes their advocacy will prevent similar tragedies for other students. The fundraiser has raised over $1,800 toward a $10,000 goal.
