Family of detainee plans peaceful protest at Bukit Aman over police custody death

The relatives of Noorizwan Zulkefly will hold a peaceful gathering at Bukit Aman police headquarters on Oct 17 to demand answers after his death in Cheras police custody.

Noorizwan Zulkefly, a 42-year-old man, was declared dead on Oct 1 following a ten-day period of detention at the Cheras district police headquarters. His brother, Nooranis Zulkefly, learned of the death via a text message allegedly sent by a police officer and says the family was never informed of the arrest. The family plans a peaceful assembly at Bukit Aman police headquarters on Oct 17 at 11 a.m., expecting lawyers, NGOs and the public to attend.

They will hand over a memorandum and request a statement from the inspector-general of police. Lawyers for Liberty co-founder N Surendran, representing the family, says the post-mortem shows blunt-force trauma and urges the case be classified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code, as well as an independent probe. Human-rights group Suaram also demands the release of remand records and clarification of detention procedures.

Why it matters

The protest highlights concerns over police accountability and custodial deaths in Malaysia.
