Family of missing Australian aid worker seeks to join Nepal flood search

Renee, an Australian disability support worker, vanished at Gyirong Port minutes before a devastating flood, and her relatives are planning a trip to Nepal to aid the search.

Renee, who lived on the Sunshine Coast and worked in disability support, was at Gyirong Port only ten minutes before a sudden flood destroyed buildings, power lines and the surrounding landscape, as shown by Chinese rescue footage. Her sister Clair Spry said Renee would have preferred attention on the displaced Nepali people and the broader climate crisis rather than on her personal story. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to cover travel costs for her partner Shaun, an emergency nurse, and other family members who wish to join the effort.

While the family understands the severity of the disaster and the slim chance of survival, they cling to a faint hope that she might be trapped or injured rather than lost. They are reviewing photos in an attempt to locate her, but officials have not yet allowed entry into the hardest-hit zone.
