Far-right groups use rapid social-media rallies to disrupt UK migrant boat arrivals

Far-right anti-migrant groups such as Patriot Platform have begun staging quickly organised protests at UK ports, forcing police to stretch resources. Authorities are monitoring social-media channels to anticipate these flash gatherings.

Anti-migrant far-right organisations, most notably Patriot Platform under Daniel Thomas, are now orchestrating swift, large-scale protests at UK coastal sites such as Gosport’s Haslar Marina, Dover and Portsmouth. These actions, often announced within hours via private WhatsApp, Facebook, X and Instagram groups, have drawn hundreds of demonstrators, some masked and carrying flares, complicating the work of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency, RNLI and Border Security Command.

Andy Mariner of the National Police Chiefs’ Council said police have had to quickly adjust tactics, using a blend of community intelligence and real-time social-media monitoring, though the operations place a noticeable strain on local resources. Researchers from Hope Not Hate and Kings College London highlight a shift from merely recording crossings to actively creating a hostile environment and a culture of fear. Several arrests have followed protests in Gosport and Eastney Marina, while similar intimidation tactics have been reported in Calais, where charities cite sabotage and threats against aid workers. The Home Office warned that illegal protest actions endanger lives and will be prosecuted.

Why it matters

The new protest tactics threaten migrant safety and stretch police resources, raising security and humanitarian concerns.
