Farmers and ranchers plan massive tractor convoy in Madrid amid election campaign
Agricultural groups will bring hundreds of tractors to Madrid this Wednesday, using the protest to demand new aid and policy changes ahead of the upcoming election.
Hundreds of tractors are set to roll through Madrid on Wednesday in a coordinated protest by COAG, Asaja and Unión de Uniones, marking the first large-scale “tractorada” during the pre-election period. The groups have pressed the Ministry of Agriculture, led by Luis Planas, for an urgent aid package that includes a stable, reduced-tax diesel regime and direct fuel rebates. They also call for a robust Common Agricultural Policy that safeguards farm incomes, opposes cuts to the EU agricultural budget, and strengthens the Law of the Supply Chain.
While the government has already extended diesel subsidies and allocated 1.000 million euros in emergency aid, the protesters argue these measures are insufficient. The UPA has withdrawn from the convoy, urging political parties to address rural concerns in their electoral platforms and to introduce a specific Family Farming Law. The demonstration will test how agricultural demands are integrated into the looming election discourse.
Why it matters
The protest highlights rural economic pressures and could shape agricultural policy and election debates in Spain.
