Farmers plan large spontaneous protest outside Romanian Government building
Farmers from various sectors will gather in front of the Government headquarters on 15 September for an unauthorized, peaceful demonstration demanding agricultural reforms.
On 15 September, farmers representing sheep, cattle, horticulture and apiculture will stage a spontaneous, non-authorized protest in front of the Romanian Government building. Organisers, including Ionică Sterp of the Professional Association of Sheep Breeders, say participants will present an extensive petition and will not leave the capital without a governmental reply. The demonstration is expected to be peaceful, though officials caution that fines may be imposed and have deployed gendarmerie units to manage crowds, traffic and security checks.
Previous protests in July saw the use of tear-gas, leaving some participants with injuries, a fact highlighted by protest leaders who urged restraint from both demonstrators and police. Representatives of the National Federation of Sheep and Goat Breeders also confirmed their members' attendance and warned of possible political manipulation.
