Farmers schedule nationwide voter-rights protests, coordinating with CJP actions

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha announced a series of protests starting on October 23, with a major rally in Delhi and other capitals on November 26, to demand protection of voting rights.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha has set a timetable for a sustained agitation over voter-rights, beginning with an action on October 23 and culminating in a coordinated rally on November 26 in Delhi and other state capitals, marking six years since the farmers’ Delhi Chalo march. Vijoo Krishnan, general secretary of the All India Kisan Sabha, emphasized that the movement will focus on grassroots mobilisation rather than concentrating solely on the capital.

Although the farmers’ groups are not formally joining the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest, they intend to align their actions on the issue of electoral roll deletions. In addition to voting concerns, the farmers continue to press for a legal guarantee of minimum support prices and to oppose free-trade agreements that could lower agricultural prices, including for milk. Preparations have included conventions in July and an upcoming All-India conference in Nalgonda, Telangana, to shape future strategies.

Why it matters

The protests could influence India's electoral process and agricultural policy ahead of upcoming elections.
