Fast bowler Mark Wood retires from England's international cricket squad

Mark Wood confirmed his decision to quit international cricket, citing ongoing knee problems that have kept him out of England’s side since the last Ashes series. The 36-year-old was part of the squads that won the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup, and he featured in four Ashes contests, famously taking the winning wicket at Trent Bridge in 2015. After undergoing left-knee surgery and missing eight months, he returned for the Ashes in Australia but was forced to leave after just 11 overs due to swelling.

Medical guidance now rules out further participation in Test and 50-over formats, leading him to retire at the end of his contract. Wood, who continues to play county cricket for Durham, expressed gratitude for representing his country and highlighted the privilege of traveling and competing at the highest level. England men’s cricket managing director Rob Key praised Wood’s ability to excite crowds and said he can look back with pride on a well-spent career.
