Fatah and Dahlan's Democratic Reform bloc meet in Alamein to discuss election reconciliation

High-level delegations from Fatah and the Democratic Reform bloc, associated with former top official Mohammed Dahlan, gathered in Alamein, Egypt, to negotiate possible reconciliation before the Palestinian legislative elections scheduled for November. PA Vice President Hussein al-Sheikh and Democratic Reform deputy Samir al-Mashharawi led the discussions, noting a constructive tone yet no practical accords, and calling on President Mahmoud Abbas to make decisive moves.

The dialogue occurs as Dahlan's faction and Hamas have been in talks to form a broad coalition that could erode Fatah's dominance. Analysts warn such an alliance would expose internal divisions within Fatah and complicate Abbas's succession plans, particularly regarding his son Yasser Abbas. The talks also align with international pressure for elections driven by European and Arab initiatives, though Abbas retains the power to shape the Palestinian National Council and could still alter the outcome.
