Fatal shooting at Edmonton trades college prompts police hunt and nearby highway operation

A man was killed after gunfire erupted at Alberta Pipe Trades College in northwest Edmonton, and police later set up a second operation in Parkland County.

Edmonton homicide detectives are probing a fatal shooting at Alberta Pipe Trades College on the city's northwest side, where a man was found with life-threatening wounds and later pronounced dead. Witnesses said a grey sedan with tinted windows entered the lot, the driver exited and fired several rounds, after which the vehicle fled at high speed. Police quickly cordoned off the area, locked down the campus and arranged transportation for students whose vehicles were locked inside.

A white truck with its doors open and a tarp-covered body were also observed near the scene. Later in the morning, RCMP officers assembled a heavy presence in Parkland County near the Yellowhead and Highway 16A intersection, briefly closing the eastbound lane of the highway. Officials have not disclosed why the two locations are being investigated together, but both agencies are working to determine any connection. Authorities have asked the public for dash-cam or CCTV footage to aid the investigation.

Why it matters

The incident raises concerns about campus safety and prompts a coordinated police response across two jurisdictions.
