Father accused of throwing two young children into Karnataka canal, both die

Police say a man named Shantappa pushed his nine-year-old daughter and two-and-a-half-year-old son into an irrigation canal in Yadgir, where both bodies were later recovered.

In Yadgir district, Karnataka, authorities recovered the bodies of a nine-year-old girl and her two-and-a-half-year-old brother after their father, Shantappa, allegedly pushed them into an irrigation canal. The father called the 112 emergency helpline to report the act, prompting police to arrive with the caller and his six-year-old daughter. The boy’s body was found at about 3:30 pm, while the girl’s was located between 5:30 pm and 6 pm during a coordinated search with the fire department and water-management officials.

Shantappa had taken all three children on a motorcycle to the canal earlier in the afternoon and spared the older daughter, who was later taken to Yadgir town. Police have registered a kidnapping case and plan to add Section 103 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, pertaining to murder, to the charges as the investigation continues.

Why it matters

The case highlights severe domestic violence and raises concerns about child safety and law enforcement response in rural India.
