Father Charged After Assaulting Mourner at Son’s Funeral Following Fatal A66 Crash
Gye Worthy, 39, has been charged with common assault, public order offences and obstructing police after he attacked a mourner during his son Cole Worthy’s funeral, with a court date set for October 2.
During the funeral for 17-year-old Cole Worthy, his father Gye Worthy, 39, allegedly became angry at comments made during the service, assaulted a mourner and then impeded police who responded to the scene. Cleveland Police have charged him with common assault, public order offences and obstructing officers, and he will appear at Teesside Magistrates’ Court on October 2. The funeral follows a tragic A66 crash on August 22 that killed Cole, four other youths and two police officers, an event linked to a gangland turf dispute over drug supplies on Teesside.
Earlier that night, Gye’s semi-detached home was severely damaged in a criminal act under investigation. Cole’s mother, Natalie McConnell, who is separated from Gye and has a new partner, said she was shocked by the disruption. The broader community has been mourning multiple victims, including police officers PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, whose ceremonial funeral was recently held in Kirkleatham. The case highlights ongoing tensions surrounding the crash and its aftermath.
