Father charged with child cruelty after toddler found on roof covered in waste
A two-year-old was discovered alone on a three-storey roof in Limerick, covered in feces, and the child's father has been charged with child cruelty.
On September 8, Gardaí were alerted to a two-year-old left alone on the ledge of a three-storey apartment block in Limerick City. Neighbours rescued the child, who was non-verbal and covered in feces, and paramedics transferred the toddler to University Hospital Limerick for assessment. Sgt Jimmy Dillane of Roxboro Road Garda station testified that the child's parents did not initially respond, and when police called, the father claimed the child was asleep with his partner, while both adults appeared under the influence of intoxicants.
The father, identified only as a man in his 40s, faced a single count of child cruelty in Limerick District Court, where Judge Patricia Harney ordered him remanded on a €100 bond with conditions including approved residence, three-day-a-week police sign-ins, and abstention from alcohol and drugs. The mother, also charged with child cruelty, was subject to reporting restrictions and had earlier appeared before the same court. Both defendants remain on bail pending a December hearing for further directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
