Father-in-law assaults murderer during sentencing in Phoenix courtroom

In a Maricopa County courtroom in Phoenix, Alberto Sanchez attacked Abel Uribe, who was being sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2022 killing of Sanchez's son-in-law, David Navidad-Parra. After delivering a heartfelt statement, Sanchez said he lost control when he heard Uribe snicker, prompting him to charge the defendant and land several blows to Uribe's head. Police quickly separated the two, and Sanchez was detained and charged with aggravated assault of a restrained victim and interfering with a judicial proceeding.

Uribe had previously pleaded guilty to first-degree murder after using the victim's credit card and setting fire to his car. Sanchez's attorney emphasized his lack of prior criminal history, while Judge Kristin Culbertson expressed sympathy but warned that courtroom violence cannot be tolerated. Sanchez was released on his own recognizance pending further proceedings.
