Father loses life rescuing his teenage sons from Vineyard riptide
Kevin Foster died after rushing into a strong current off Martha’s Vineyard to help his two sons, who were among four swimmers rescued.
A violent riptide off Long Point beach on Martha’s Vineyard swept four swimmers, including teenagers Kaden and Kenneth, into the sea on July 31. Their father, 55-year-old Kevin Foster, plunged into the water to assist them, and all four individuals were rescued by bystanders and emergency responders. Foster was retrieved unconscious, and despite full medical intervention, he died on the shore.
West Tisbury Police Chief Bradley Cortez said all available lifesaving actions were taken. Witnesses described the escalating danger and expressed shock at the scene. The family released a statement honoring Foster’s generosity and the deep ties they have to the island.
