Father sentenced to over seven years for attempted murder of his 8-year-old son

A 53-year-old man was given a seven-and-a-half-year prison term after being convicted of trying to kill his eight-year-old son and threatening the child's mother.

A Helsinki District Court sentenced a 53-year-old man, born in 1973, to seven and a half years in prison for attempting to murder his eight-year-old son and for issuing unlawful threats and defamatory remarks toward the child's mother. The father had bought gas cylinders and installed them in his van during a family summer trip, then moved to the rear of the vehicle to sleep with his son before opening the cylinders. He fell asleep or lost consciousness, awakening to his child's distress and vomiting, and subsequently called emergency services.

The court determined the act met the legal definition of an attempted murder, noting that the failure to complete the crime was due to external factors, not a voluntary abandonment. The publication withheld the father's name to protect the child's identity.
