FBI weighs adding economic espionage charge to Saudi OpenAI engineer case

The FBI is considering an economic espionage accusation against Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi national who allegedly placed a hidden recording device in an OpenAI executive meeting room.

Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi citizen employed as an engineer at OpenAI, was arrested after investigators discovered a tiny recording device hidden behind a television in a conference room used by company executives. He faces a federal charge for violating a recording statute, carrying a possible five-year sentence, and a judge has ordered him held without bail due to a high flight-risk assessment. The FBI is now contemplating an additional economic espionage charge, based on evidence that Alfozan may have sought to provide the captured data to Saudi authorities.

Court documents show he exchanged WhatsApp messages with a member of the Saudi royal family throughout 2025 and 2026, who allegedly attempted to enlist him for an AI initiative in Saudi Arabia. The most recent communication occurred on the same day Alfozan entered the meeting room to retrieve the device. OpenAI removed the device on 30 September and reported the breach to the FBI. The case underscores growing concerns over corporate and state espionage in the competitive AI sector.

Why it matters

It highlights the risk of state-linked espionage targeting sensitive AI research and corporate secrets.
