FC Barcelona denounces police handling of fan arrested before Elche match

FC Barcelona condemned what it called a disproportionate police arrest of a supporter carrying an Estelada flag before the club's 5-0 win over Elche.

Prior to the opening-weekend match in which Barcelona defeated Elche 5-0, police intervened when a supporter displayed an Estelada flag, confiscating the banner and striking the fan several times before taking him into custody. FC Barcelona released an official statement labeling the police action as disproportionate and inconsistent, expressing dissatisfaction with the handling of the incident. The club offered support to the detained supporter and his relatives and emphasized that the Estelada is a legally recognized emblem whose display is a legitimate exercise of free speech.

Barcelona also noted that police have previously confiscated such flags and reiterated that the symbol does not constitute incitement to hatred or violence. The club is awaiting further explanations from the authorities and reserves the right to take appropriate measures to protect the rights of its members and supporters at both its home ground and away venues.

Why it matters

The incident raises concerns about police conduct and the protection of free expression at sporting events.
