FDA Accelerates Approval of New Breast Cancer Treatments and Diagnostic Tools
The FDA acting commissioner announced ten new breast-cancer drug approvals this year, alongside companion blood tests and AI-driven diagnostic tools to speed detection and treatment.
Key drugs include datopotamab deruxtecan for advanced triple-negative cancer and broader indications for trastuzumab deruxtecan in early-stage HER2-positive patients. The agency also authorized camizestrant together with the Guardant360 CDx blood test, which detects ESR1 mutations in circulating tumor DNA, allowing clinicians to adjust therapy before radiographic progression.
Artificial-intelligence tools now streamline review processes and support radiologists with AI-enhanced mammography and the ArteraAI Breast system that forecasts metastasis risk. The FDA continues to enforce the Mammography Quality Standards Act, ensuring qualified technologists, equipment, and physicians handle screenings. Patient advocacy groups are credited with shaping research priorities, and the commission urges regular screening for those over 40 and earlier testing for high-risk families.
Why it matters
Faster FDA approvals and AI diagnostics can improve survival rates for breast-cancer patients.
