Federal agents seize migrant boat in Newport Harbor, detaining 14 Mexican nationals
Customs and Border Protection intercepted a fishing-type vessel off Newport, California, taking 14 passengers who identified as Mexican nationals into custody and turning them over to Border Patrol.
Around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Interceptor Vessel intercepted a fishing-type boat suspected of human trafficking in waters off Newport, California, and escorted it to Newport Harbor. Federal officials reported that the craft carried 11 men, two women and a young boy, all claiming Mexican nationality; all 14 were taken into custody and transferred to Border Patrol, while the boat itself was seized.
One passenger received medical attention for dehydration and seasickness before being cleared. A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson reiterated that maritime migration is dangerous and that the U.S. border remains closed to illegal entry by sea, air, or land. This operation follows two earlier incidents on Sept. 5 and Sept. 19, as well as a recent landing on Edgewater Place and a Coast Guard interception of a larger cabin boat. Newport City Council member Erik Weigand expressed alarm at the recurring smuggling attempts and proposed installing fixed cameras at the harbor mouth to monitor suspicious vessels.
Why it matters
The seizure highlights growing maritime smuggling attempts as land border security tightens, affecting local safety and immigration enforcement.
