Federal anti-discrimination commissioner calls for national menopause strategy

Ferda Ataman urged the government to adopt a nationwide plan to prevent workplace discrimination against women experiencing menopause.

At a Berlin briefing, Ferda Ataman, the Federal Anti-Discrimination Commissioner, called for a comprehensive national strategy to protect women undergoing menopause from workplace bias. She explained that the topic has long been taboo, leaving many women reluctant to disclose symptoms such as pain, insomnia and hot flashes. Ataman emphasized the need for increased medical research and concrete workplace accommodations, noting that about eleven million German women between 40 and 60 are likely experiencing menopause.

She pointed out the crucial role these women play in fields like schools, nursing and the restaurant industry. Practical steps she proposed include flexible scheduling, climate-controlled workspaces, readily available toilets and access to occupational health counseling. The commissioner stressed that creating menopause-friendly workplaces is both feasible and essential for a fair labor market.

Why it matters

Addressing menopause bias can improve health, productivity and gender equity for millions of workers.
