Federal parcel in Louisiana cleared for Venture Global LNG expansion
The Interior Department transferred a historic 3-acre site at the Calcasieu River mouth to the Bureau of Land Management, paving the way for a non-competitive sale to Venture Global’s affiliate for LNG plant growth.
A historic 3-acre parcel at the mouth of the Calcasieu River, used since 1875 by the U.S. Coast Guard, has been placed under the Bureau of Land Management’s temporary custody following Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s Public Land Order 7969. The BLM intends to conduct a non-competitive direct sale to Cameron Land Ventures LLC, an affiliate of Venture Global LNG, once the required NEPA Environmental Impact Statement is completed.
Venture Global plans to boost output at its Calcasieu Pass facility by 10 million tons annually, bringing total capacity to 39 million tons with production slated for late 2028. Acting BLM Southeast States District Manager Shayne Banks framed the transaction as supporting American energy dominance and delivering fair market value. Local fishing and environmental groups, including Fishermen Involved in Saving Our Heritage and the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, criticized the expedited process and the lack of broader public input. The sale becomes effective on Aug. 21, ten days after the order’s Federal Register publication.
Why it matters
The deal could significantly increase U.S. LNG exports while raising environmental and community concerns in coastal Louisiana.
