Federal Treasury Covers Three-quarters of ACT Gun Buyback Costs

The federal government will fund 75% of the Australian Capital Territory's gun buyback program and all firearm destruction expenses, with the ACT covering the remainder.

Negotiations between the federal and ACT governments resulted in a funding split for a national gun buyback scheme in the territory. The Commonwealth will provide three-quarters of the purchase and administrative costs and will pay 100% of the costs to destroy surrendered firearms. The ACT government will finance the balance of the program. Details on the rollout schedule and compensation for participants are expected shortly.

Why it matters

It shows how federal and territory authorities share costs to implement a national gun reduction strategy.
