Feijóo places mayors atop PP candidate lists ahead of May local elections
Alberto Núñez Feijóo and secretary Miguel Tellado have drafted PP electoral lists that feature numerous mayors, signaling a push for experienced managers before the May municipal vote.
Alberto Núñez Feijóo, together with his secretary general Miguel Tellado, has assembled People’s Party electoral lists that prominently feature municipal leaders. Mayors such as María José Catalá (Valencia), Xavier García Albiol (Badalona/Barcelona), María José García-Pelayo (Jerez de la Frontera), Pilar Miranda (Huelva), Luis Mariano Camacho (Bailén) and Carlos Velázquez (Toledo) top the tickets in their respective provinces, positioning them for potential parliamentary seats and future ministerial roles.
The strategy also promotes combative figures like Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo and Borja Sémper, underscoring party unity after years of internal divisions. Additional candidates include regional councillors and a former senator, Rocío Dívar, now heading the Zaragoza list. While the final Madrid slate and Senate candidates await confirmation, the PP hopes the municipal-experience emphasis will strengthen its position ahead of the May local elections and any coalition talks with Vox to control the Senate.
Why it matters
Featuring mayors on national lists shows the PP’s plan to use local governance credibility to boost its chances in upcoming elections and a potential government.
