Feijóo proposes equal Spanish and Catalan teaching hours, sparking backlash from PSC and separatists
Alberto Núñez Feijóo's plan to give Spanish the same classroom time as Catalan in Catalonia has drawn criticism from the PSC and pro-independence leaders.
In his recently released "Contrato con España," Alberto Núñez Feijóo pledged to implement a "cordial bilingualism" model in Catalan schools, aiming for parity between Spanish and Catalan teaching hours. The proposal has been sharply rebuked by the PSC, whose spokesperson Lluïsa Moret described it as anti-Catalan rhetoric used by the right and far-right as an electoral tool. Salvador Illa, president of the Generalitat, affirmed that the Catalan language will not be touched.
Independentist leader Oriol Junqueras echoed the criticism on social media, warning that the plan endangers the historic immersion system for Catalan education. The Partido Popular and its ally Vox are seen as the primary political forces behind the initiative, heightening tensions over regional language policy.
