Feijóo's remarks on minimum wage and income tax spark political clash

Alberto Núñez Feijóo claimed the government profited from raising the minimum wage and that it increased workers' IRPF liability, prompting sharp rebuttals from the ruling parties.

In a morning interview on Cadena SER, Alberto Núñez Feijóo asserted that the coalition government’s increase of the minimum wage generated a fiscal gain for the state and forced employees to pay more IRPF. The program’s presenter, Aimar Bretos, corrected him, noting that the minimum wage is still exempt from IRPF, a point Feijóo contested. PSOE officials and vice-president Yolanda Díaz labeled his statements as false, while the PP leader later clarified that any future rise would automatically remain exempt under the law.

Treasury officials highlighted that the exemption has been debated in parliament and that the Ministry of Labour is preparing a roughly 5% increase for the minimum wage before the November election. The controversy revives earlier disputes over whether the minimum wage should eventually be taxed as more workers earn above the exemption threshold.

Why it matters

The dispute reveals how minimum-wage policy and tax treatment are becoming key election issues in Spain.
