Ferrari Nears Launch of Hypersail Flying Monohull for Ocean Record Attempt

Ferrari's 100-foot Hypersail, a foiling monohull designed to ‘fly’ over water, is entering its final construction phase with sea trials slated for early 2027.

After three years of development, Ferrari's Hypersail—a 100-foot, foiling monohull intended to skim above the ocean—has moved into its final build stage at a Pisa shipyard. The vessel’s distinctive yellow-fly and Hypersail grey finish hides a complex array of foils, a novel keel with a movable flap, and a rudder equipped with a micro-flap, all coordinated by Ferrari's Flight Control electronics derived from its sports-car expertise.

CEO Benedetto Vigna greeted observers, emphasizing that the boat will be launched into the water in early 2027, with sea trials expected by June. Project leader Enrico Voltolini plans a ten-person crew to test the system, which seeks to set a new round-the-world record, challenging Thomas Coville’s Jules Verne Trophy performance on the trimaran Sodebo Ultim 3. The hull, built from multiple layers of carbon-fiber, aims to combine extreme lightness with rigidity, while the integrated renewable-energy technologies target full energy self-sufficiency.
