Ferry capsizes near Masalembu Islands, reviving Indonesia's 'Bermuda Triangle' myth

A ferry operated by Virgo Transport 8 capsized in the Java Sea close to the Masalembu Islands, a region long associated with perilous sea conditions and folklore. The ship, en route from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, had 243 passengers and crew aboard; at least six have been confirmed dead, 108 rescued, and 129 remain unaccounted for. Mohammad Syafii, head of Basarnas, reported that the search involves 1,097 personnel, 17 vessels and five aircraft.

Strong currents, seasonal east-monsoon winds and high waves make the area especially dangerous, fueling its nickname as "Indonesia’s Bermuda Triangle." The tragedy recalls past calamities such as the 1981 Tampomas II fire and the 2007 Adam Air 574 crash, which have cemented the legend in popular culture. Maritime historian Fanada Sholihah and former BMKG director Daryono noted that the physical hazards underpin the myth, warning that vessels crossing perpendicular to the currents can be easily pushed off course.
