Few convictions follow rape reports in Sweden’s elder-care system, experts say many cases go unrecorded

A review of police data shows 88 rape complaints in Sweden’s elder-care sector from 2022-2025, yet courts have sentenced just nine male offenders. One investigation is still pending. Criminologist Anders Östlund explains that many victims are isolated, demented or confused, making prosecutions difficult and suggesting a substantial dark figure.
