FIA appeals court to decide Monaco GP classification after timing error
The FIA International Court of Appeal will hear Red Bull Racing and McLaren’s challenges to the revised Monaco Grand Prix results following a pit-lane speed-measurement mistake.
After the Monaco Grand Prix, the FIA admitted an error in its pit-lane speed-trap calibration, which prompted a series of penalties and post-race adjustments that altered the midfield and front-running order. Drivers such as Pierre Gasly, Isack Hadjar and Oscar Piastri saw their positions changed, sparking complaints from teams. Red Bull Racing and McLaren have filed appeals, arguing that the stewards’ retroactive decisions breached standard regulatory processes.
The FIA International Court of Appeal will convene in Paris to review the timeline of decisions, using telemetry, radio transcripts and timing logs as evidence. The panel’s ruling could either confirm the current revised classification or trigger another recalculation, affecting championship points and podium placements. This hearing represents a critical test of the sport’s governance mechanisms after a rare admission of technical fault.
Why it matters
The outcome will determine championship points and set a precedent for handling technical errors in Formula 1.
