Fidesz-KDNP MPs demand immediate, unconditional release of all EU funds for Hungary
Fidesz-KDNP members of the European Parliament are calling for the EU to pay Hungary's pending cohesion and recovery funds without conditions and to boost spending on border security and agriculture.
Fidesz-KDNP MEPs have lodged a formal request for the European Union to immediately and unconditionally disburse all funds allocated to Hungary, including about €6.3 billion of cohesion money that was frozen in 2022. The proposal, presented by MEP Tamás Deutsch on behalf of the Hungarian delegation, also calls for an €11 billion increase to the EU’s 2027 budget to cover additional border-security and agricultural needs.
Specific demands include a €2.5 billion boost to the Common Agricultural Policy, a €2 billion rise in border-protection spending, and a doubling of the agricultural crisis fund to €900 million because of recent drought-related losses. The group accuses the European Commission and the European Parliament’s liberal majority of withholding money for political reasons, despite the Orbán government having negotiated €22 billion in cohesion funding in 2020. While Education Minister Judit Lannert said Erasmus participation will return to all 21 Hungarian universities in the 2026/27 academic year, Fidesz-KDNP still urges the Commission to lift all remaining restrictions and proposes cutting €250 million from EU programmes that support “left-wing” civil-society groups.
