Fidesz strategist Orbán Balázs defends poll handling, denies campaign finance misuse

Orbán Balázs told Kossuth Radio that post-election poll figures were adjusted, admitted campaign errors, and rejected accusations of illegal spending.

Orbán Balázs, former political director of the ex-prime minister and former Fidesz campaign manager, appeared on Kossuth Radio to discuss the party’s recent loss. He explained that poll numbers were re-calculated after the election and that the party recognized most voters did not share its stance, while also conceding strategic errors in the campaign. When asked about accusations that Fidesz overspent, he insisted the party has always adhered to spending laws over its 36-year history.

Balázs said research indicating a “Tisza advantage” existed but was inconclusive, and that higher turnout altered expectations. He dismissed corruption charges against former minister Hankó Balázs as politically motivated witch-hunt and criticized the government’s alleged media control and pressure on opponents. Finally, he linked domestic dissatisfaction to a broader European proxy war and looming energy crisis, warning that public frustration could rise further.

Why it matters
