Figma rolls out markdown editor and AI code tools in India launch
Figma introduced a markdown-based Specs editor and opened its code-layers AI feature to public beta during its Config event in India.
During its first Config event in India, Figma announced several new capabilities designed to streamline design-to-code workflows. The centerpiece, Specs, is a markdown editor that enables teams to document their design language, embed canvas elements, FigJam diagrams, and reference code layers, serving as a central guide for both human designers and AI agents. In parallel, Figma expanded access to its code-layers feature, shifting it from a private to a public beta so users can ask the AI to translate designs into code or tweak existing code snippets.
Loredana Crisan, chief design officer, emphasized that these tools help steer AI toward more deterministic results and support the rapid iteration of software products. The rollout also includes integration with the Payload headless CMS, whose downloads have reportedly risen sixfold, and adds support for more than 20 new tools such as Open Code, Dia, Grok Bot, and the Indian AI startup Sarvam. Figma noted that India is its largest market outside the United States, with the platform used by 40% of the country's top 100 BSE-listed firms.
Why it matters
The updates give designers and developers a clearer, AI-assisted path from visual concepts to functional code, boosting productivity.
