Filipino-Chinese business group warns expelling Chinese envoy could trigger reciprocal action
The Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry cautioned that declaring Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan persona non grata may lead to a tit-for-tat response and harm trade ties.
Victor Lim, head of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry, warned that labeling Chinese Ambassador Jing Quan persona non grata could provoke a reciprocal move against the Philippine envoy in Beijing and damage bilateral trade. The call comes after a Senate resolution sought Jing's removal following his comment that Beijing could "easily win" if it resorted to force. In response, the Chinese Embassy in Manila posted that it would not welcome Philippine diplomats if the Philippines acted similarly.
The presidential palace has deferred the matter to the Department of Foreign Affairs, stating the president prefers maintaining amicable ties with China. The DFA summoned Jing to convey the Philippines’ strong objection to his statements. All parties have been urged to calm tensions to protect economic interests.
Why it matters
The dispute could jeopardize Philippines-China trade and diplomatic relations if diplomatic expulsions occur.
