Finance Minister Amir Hamzah urges EPF to broaden retirement support for Malaysians
Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan called on the Employees Provident Fund to adapt its services to changing work patterns and improve retirement adequacy.
At the Employees Provident Fund's 75th anniversary dinner, Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan urged the institution to shift its focus from mere asset growth to greater relevance, inclusivity, and impact for members. He argued that a modern retirement system must treat contributors as individuals with evolving needs, such as caring for children and aging parents, and should support both personal wellbeing and national resilience.
Hamzah drew on his experience as former EPF chief executive to stress the connection between retirement adequacy, household financial security, and economic stability. EPF chairman Tan Sri Mohd Zuki Ali affirmed the fund's commitment to adapt alongside Malaysia's changing employment landscape while preserving the trust placed in it. Over seven decades, the EPF has weathered economic downturns, technological shifts, and the Covid-19 disruption, consistently safeguarding members' futures for successive generations.
Why it matters
Ensuring the EPF meets modern retirement needs is crucial for Malaysians' financial security and the country's economic stability.
